1. Background
To ensure that police peacekeepers are able to fulfill the mandate to protect civilians and to build the host State police capacity in this regard, the Police Division of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) has developed the United Nations Police Gender Toolkit: Standardized Best Practices on Gender Mainstreaming in Peacekeeping (UNPOL Gender Toolkit).
A consultant is being sought to copy edit the UNPOL Gender Toolkit materials.
2. Scope of work
Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer and reporting to the Chief of the Strategic Policy and Development Section of the Police Division (SPDS)/OROLSI/DPKO, the contractor will:

The activities below will be undertaken for the following UN Police Gender Toolkit materials:
- Handbook (approx. 80,000)
- Compendium of Project Tools (approx. 80,000)
- Compendium of Case Studies (approx. 20,000)
- Instructor’s Notes (approx. 50,000)
- Presentation slides (approx. 5,000)

Proofreading and ensuring consistency and accuracy in grammar, spelling, and punctuation and coherence of style used.
Suggesting changes to enhance articles' readability, conciseness and style according to the target audience.
Ensuring the text is in line with the United Nations Editorial Manual (http://www.dgacm.org/editorialmanual/) e.g. use of hyphens, capital letters, figures and spellings are used consistently.
Ensuring the text, illustrations and images used are in line with the overall United Nations Police mission and mandate.
Eliminating repetitions.
Ensuring that names, places and organizations are spelled properly and that facts, dates and statistics are accurate.
Ensuring that claims are consistent and arguments made are complete.
Ensuring that each point made is supported with adequate evidence.
Checking the overall structure for each document (e.g. chapter, tool, presentation) including:
an appropriate introduction and conclusion,
clarity in the relation of each paragraph to the main proposition of the chapter, tool or presentation
logical sequence and structure of the paragraphs
clarity of transitions between paragraphs 10. Checking the structure within paragraphs to ensure a clear topic sentence and identify extraneous or missing sentences.
Checking for clarity such as definition of important terms, a clear meaning of each sentence, including checking each pronoun and reference made and proper words used to express ideas.
Checking for the style including appropriate tone used and identification of unnecessary phrases and repetitions.
Ensuring a gender-sensitive use of language.
Ensuring that quotes, paraphrases and ideas are cited from sources appropriately and in the correct format as per the UN Editorial Manual.
3. Required competencies
Work experience:Minimum of three years work experience on editing;Experience working in international peace and security or international development preferable; Experience working with gender or women’s rights preferable; Prior experience with United Nations preferable.
Minimum education requirement:First level university degree i.e. Bachelor Degree in communication, international studies, gender studies, social science or any related field.
Language:Excellent written and oral skills in English language required.
Competencies:Demonstrate effective organizational skills and ability to handle work in an efficient and timely manner; Fully proficient in computer skills (MS Office – i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

5. Reporting lines
The contractor will report directly to the Programme Management Officer in the Strategic Policy and Development Section of the Police Division/OROLSI/DPKO.
6. Duration of work
From 1 December 2019 to 31 March 2020, the consultant will be required to undertake the tasks enumerated under paragraph 2 for a total of 4 months.
