Role overview
Telling stories is a vital part of VSO's work. It puts people right at the heart of our organisation.
As Editorial Manager (sabbatical cover), you'll oversee VSO's photographic, video and written content production, ensuring outputs are of the highest professional and ethical quality. You will ensure that VSO’s content communicates the powerful contribution that volunteers make and the stories of people around the world who are supported through this work. You'll ensure published content is suitable for the planned audience, and that editorial standards are met.
The role involves research, planning and delivering content production for projects such as the VSO supporter magazine and public fundraising appeals. You’ll also have responsibility for content aimed at institutional donor audiences and key stakeholders.
You’ll lead a team of content producers, plus freelancers and volunteers, managing them to execute a content plan, producing outputs that meet legal requirements and ethical guidelines, while contributing to marketing team goals. You will have responsibility for writing contracts, managing a tight budget and ensuring storytelling principles are adhered to.
As a passionate storyteller, you will be playing a vital role in inspiring support for VSO and helping us progress towards our vision of a fair world for everyone.
This is a 3 months sabbatical cover from the 2 January to the 31 March 2020.
Skills, qualifications and experience
* You will be a creative and practical minded self-started.
* You will be a champion of Plain English, an innovative storyteller and you’ll understand audiences. You will have experience of delivering storygathering trips in developing countries, interviewing vulnerable contributors and directing multimedia freelancers. You will have commissioned and produced packages of audiovisual and photographic content for different channels.
* You will be a skilled writer and project manager, understanding how to balance priorities and defend editorial decision-making.
