Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Social Media Section of the Digital and Promotion Branch in the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC). The Section is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the multilingual social media strategy of the Department, in line with the global communications strategy for the United Nations and as guided by administrative policies on the institutional use of social media. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Director, Digital and Promotion Branch.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent may be responsible for the following duties:
• Conceptualize and implement the multilingual social media strategy for the Department of Global Communication, in line with the global communications strategy for the United Nations.
•Lead and direct the multilingual social media team; plan and allocate work assignments; coach, mentor, and manage staff; participate in recruitment and selection of new staff and in the development of training programmes.
•Play a key role in advising on and supporting the social media platforms of the Secretary-General and his spokesperson to ensure impact, engagement and growth.
•Assess the overall effectiveness of social media initiatives across the Secretariat and advise on strategy.
•Represent the Department at inter-agency meetings and participate in international, regional or national meetings; and undertake social-media related discussions with representatives of other institutions and key partners, including Member States.
•Undertake other tasks as may be required.

Ability to produce a variety of written communications products in a clear, concise style. Ability to present and defend difficult positions to senior officials. Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in public information, digital media, or journalism. Experience managing global multilingual social media operations is required. Technological expertise of social media platforms and of effectively engaging audiences on social media is required. Experience leading global social media campaigns in an international organization is desirable.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
