Role overview
As the Supporter Engagement Manager (Retention) - maternity cover you will lead the development and delivery of a rich donor retention programme, helping reduce attrition and keep our existing donor base engaged, energised and inspired by VSO’s work. You will manage the retention team within VSO’s Supporter Engagement Team.
Responsibilities
Strategy, Planning and Budget:
• Working with the Head of Supporter Engagement develop a supporter engagement strategy, with innovation and engagement at its heart.
• Manage annual supporter retention marketing activity and deliver the budget to maximise long and short-term income from supporters, reporting on progress against targets to the Head of Supporter Engagement.
This includes re-forecasting, monthly reporting and the annual budgeting cycle.
Delivery of Supporter-focused Fundraising Communications:
• Project manage and execute supporter journeys and campaigns during the year across UK markets. The team is responsible for a biannual supporter magazine and appeals, the donor retention email programme, managing blogs for VSO’s regular giving product and telemarketing.
• Ensure copy is sub edited and proof read, providing the reader with engaging materials that will hook and propel them to give/keep giving.
• Monitor and report regularly on the effectiveness of campaigns, providing actionable insight that helps to maximise their return.
Content gathering:
• Work with the Retention team to gather content from VSO projects, conducting interviews, briefing and directing photography and video footage.
• Always adhere to content gathering principals, ensuring primary actors are respected and informed of what their stories will be used for. Gather content only after written consent has been obtained. People management Manage and lead team members, managing performance and setting annual objectives. Ensure that there are opportunities for career development and that the team feels inspired and motivated.
Collaboration responsibilities:
Work closely with the Supporter Engagement team to grow income, to ensure campaigns are closely aligned and integrated, and that opportunities for engagement are maximised.
Work closely with the wider Public Fundraising team to collaborate on projects when needed, share content, problem solve and support each other.
Work closely with the Data & Insight team to ensure campaigns take a 360 approach and are continuously optimising and maximising opportunities with all audience groups.
Proactively manage a range of suppliers and internal service providers and agencies to ensure cost-effectiveness and well managed campaigns.
Build relationships with Programmes staff to keep abreast of what VSO is doing in the field and identify suitable content leads for Retention comms.

We are looking for an experienced supporter engagement (retention) manager for this maternity cover with excellent communication skills. You will manage, develop and help deliver fundraising campaigns that inspire VSO’s warm supporters to keep donating, including VSO’s regular giving product, appeals, supporter magazine, telemarketing and supporter e-newsletter, among other activities. You will lead the retention team and develop strong relationships with teams across VSO raising the profile of the Fundraising team and campaigns.
You can demonstrate:
• Significant knowledge and experience of retention fundraising.
• Comfortable influencing senior stakeholders and colleagues across VSO.
• Ability to keep up to date with sector trends including charity regulations and develop an external network.
• Works well under pressure to strict deadlines with strong attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, influencing, negotiating and relationship-building and leadership skills.
• Good judgment and analytical skills.
• Proven experience of successfully introducing new initiatives to an established group of stakeholders.
• Line management experience.
• Good knowledge of the principles of direct marketing and understanding of relationship-based fundraising.
• Excellent IT and data skills - highly competent at Word, Excel and Powerpoint and experienced at using database packages (ideally Raiser’s Edge), including understanding of data manipulation and segmentation for direct marketing campaigns.
