The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs.

This Internship is located in the Technology Development Unit (TDU) within the Technology Development Design and Planning (TDDPS) under the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications technologies (SGITT) at the UNGSC in Valencia, Spain.

The Technology Development Unit (TDU) serves as a vital component within the Service for Geospatial, Information, and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT), specifically in the Technology Development, Design, and Planning Section (TDDPS). The TDU plays a pivotal role in various endeavours such as researching, assessing, and selecting suitable solutions to address mission-related challenges. Additionally, it conducts proof-of-concept and pilot projects aimed at implementing innovative capabilities into peacekeeping missions. The TDU also focuses on optimizing current practices, improving efficiency and establishing standardized technologies and processes based on successful outcomes.
The Intern reports to and works under the supervision of the Chief, TDU.
The internship is for six (6) months in Valencia. One post is available.
The Intern is required to work from the premises.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Chief TDU or other designated officer, the Intern will be performing the following duties:

• Research the latest UAS hardware and software available and present findings to the team
• Assist in performing photogrammetry tasks to evaluate the appropriateness of drone imagery.
• Support the importing of 3D models into different VR/AR devices, such as Meta Quest and Microsoft HoloLens2.
• Contribute to the utilization of 3D modelling software, such as Blender, Cloud Compare, and MeshLab, to modify 3D models.
• Assist with the testing of a hate speech detection application.
• Support the testing of a live video analytics application.
• Update documents/data to assure the integrity of the project
• Report progress and updates in weekly technology meetings
• Assist with updating and interacting with project stakeholders in the regular meetings
• Other duties as required

Education

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

The field of study must be closely related to the type of Internship you are applying for:
• Computer Science
• Information Technology
• Engineering

The Intern is expected to:
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
• Very good command of the English language, both verbally and in writing
The Intern may also have:
• An interest in Unmanned Aircraft Systems
• An interest in Extended Reality
